The community in Nebraska comes together to honor its national day and celebrate the accomplishments of its members overseas.

OMAHA, NE – The Salvadoran consulate in Omaha recently hosted a poignant celebration for the National Day of Salvadorans Abroad, centering the event on the premiere of the documentary series “Traveling with the Diaspora.” The film showcases the diverse successes of Salvadorans who have built new lives around the globe.

Held on November 26 at the consulate’s offices, the event brought the community together for an evening of national pride. Consul Jackeline Cortezzo addressed the attendees, expressing her gratitude. “We thank each of you for being part of this diaspora that represents our country with so much effort and dedication,” she stated. Looking ahead, she added, “We hope next year to invite the entire diaspora from Kansas and Nebraska to join us in celebrating this significant date.”

The audience of approximately 20 people received an exclusive first look at the documentary’s inaugural episode, which profiles the journeys of three Salvadoran businesswomen establishing themselves in Turkey, Spain, and the United States. The project is a collaborative effort between El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Channel 10, and the Ministry of Communications.

The series had its official national broadcast on December 10 on Channel 10 and its social media platforms, with subsequent episodes planned for a monthly release schedule.

Salvadorans Abroad: Ambassadors of Their Homeland

Throughout the event, Consul Cortezzo emphasized the diplomatic mission’s commitment to serving all Salvadorans with the respect and care they deserve. She powerfully framed the diaspora’s role, calling them “the first ambassadors of our nation. Through your work and representation, you elevate the name of El Salvador.”

She reinforced the Salvadoran government’s view, under President Nayib Bukele, that the diaspora is a key partner in the country’s development. “There is a recognized need to strengthen ties with our community abroad from every angle—social, economic, political, and cultural. It is vital to showcase their stories and acknowledge that, even after leaving, their connection to our beloved homeland remains,” Cortezzo explained.

Having been in her role for just a month, Consul Cortezzo is already making her mark by actively engaging with the local community. We wish her the greatest success in her new position.
