Health officials with the East Central District Health Department confirmed a measles case in Platte County, marking the second case reported in the county this week.

A Wednesday news release from the East Central District Health Department said the new patient is an unvaccinated person who lives in the same home as the first confirmed case, who was an unvaccinated child. Health officials said the child had recent travel history to Arizona.

The East Central District Health Department said people may have been recently exposed to measles at the following locations:

  • Shell Creek Baptist Church in Columbus on Dec. 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Columbus Community Hospital Emergency Department on Dec. 29 from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

The department said anyone present at those locations during those times should visit its website and fill out the risk assessment survey.

Anyone without access to the internet or who needs help filling out the risk assessment survey, call the East Central District Health Department at 402-562-8969.

The new case is the third one to be diagnosed in the state this year. In May, a vaccinated child in Sheridan County contracted the disease, and there were no other known cases. It was the first case reported in the state in eight years.

Nationwide, there have been more than 2,000 measles cases this year in 44 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s the highest number of cases since 1992.
