The Omaha Children’s Museum will begin its 50th anniversary celebration May 30 and 31 with a two-day birthday party, hands-on activities, special guests and the opening of two new exhibits for the summer.
The celebration starts Saturday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m. with birthday cake, candles and children’s characters.
Birthday activities will continue during regular museum hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The weekend lineup includes live science shows, STEAM activities, coloring stations, a giant birthday card and appearances by popular children’s characters.
All birthday activities are included with general admission tickets or an Omaha Children’s Museum membership.
The birthday party starts Saturday with cake and characters
The museum will open its anniversary weekend with a birthday moment at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Families can expect birthday cake, candles and children’s characters as part of the kickoff. The celebration will then continue throughout regular museum hours on both Saturday and Sunday.
Birthday party favors will be available for families while supplies last.
Science shows and STEAM activities will run during museum hours
The two-day celebration includes a full lineup of birthday-themed activities for children and families.
The museum will host live science shows featuring liquid nitrogen ice cream, along with hands-on STEAM activities such as making birthday cake slime.
Visitors can also stop by birthday-themed coloring stations and sign a giant birthday card during the celebration.
Darth Vader, Bluey, Ariel and other characters will appear
Several children’s characters are scheduled to help celebrate the museum’s birthday.
The announced lineup includes Darth Vader, Ariel, Belle, Spiderman, Ghost Spider, Bluey, Perry the Platypus, Runza Rex and Stormy from the Storm Chasers.
The museum announcement did not list individual appearance times for each character.
Ciao Bambini! and Super Sports Squared open for summer
The anniversary weekend will also bring the debut of two new exhibits: Ciao Bambini! and Super Sports Squared.
The exhibits will anchor the museum’s summer programming and add to its lineup of hands-on experiences for children.
The Omaha Children’s Museum offers exhibits, workshops, programs, presentations and special events designed around learning through play, discovery and participation.
The museum began in 1976 in a station wagon
The Omaha Children’s Museum started in 1976 in the back of a station wagon, traveling throughout Omaha to reach as many children as possible.
Since 1989, the museum has operated from its current location at 20th Street and St. Mary’s Avenue.
The museum’s 50th year begins with the May 30 and 31 birthday weekend and the opening of its summer exhibits.
