OMAHA, Nebraska — Labor Day will change several public services across Nebraska on Monday, Sept. 7, including public transportation in Omaha and Lincoln, state driver licensing offices, mail delivery and trash collection in Omaha.
Metro Transit will suspend all service in the Omaha area for the holiday, while StarTran buses will not operate in Lincoln. U.S. Postal Service locations and Nebraska state driver licensing offices will also be closed.
In Grand Island, however, the Nebraska State Fair remains open for its final day of 2026.
Metro, ORBT, MOBY and Micro Flex will not run Monday in Omaha
Metro Transit will not provide service on Labor Day.
The holiday suspension includes regular Metro bus routes, ORBT, MOBY and Micro Flex. Metro administrative offices will also be closed Monday.
Regular service is scheduled to return Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The closure affects riders in Omaha and other communities served by the metropolitan transit system. Metro posts its holiday schedule and service closures on its official closings and observances page.
StarTran buses will not operate in Lincoln
StarTran will also suspend bus service Monday in Lincoln, and its office will be closed for Labor Day.
The city transit system lists Labor Day among the seven holidays each year when regular bus service does not operate. Paratransit service also observes the holiday schedule.
Regular routes are expected to resume Tuesday.
Omaha trash collection moves back one day all week
Labor Day also changes Omaha’s trash, recycling and yard waste collection schedule.
There will be no collection Monday. Service will run one day behind for the remainder of the week: Monday routes will be collected Tuesday, Tuesday routes on Wednesday and so on. Friday collection will move to Saturday.
The change applies to the City of Omaha’s municipal collection system. Private haulers and neighboring communities may follow different schedules.
Residents can confirm their collection date through Omaha’s official Wasteline holiday collection schedule.
Nebraska driver licensing offices are closed
Nebraska state Driver Licensing offices will be closed Monday for Labor Day.
The Nebraska State Office Building will also be closed for the holiday.
County treasurer offices, which handle services such as vehicle titles and registrations, may follow separate local schedules.
Several DMV services remain available online, including some license renewals, replacements and vehicle-related transactions. Holiday closures are listed on the Nebraska DMV website.
Regular mail delivery stops for Labor Day
U.S. Postal Service locations across Nebraska will be closed Monday.
There will be no regular mail delivery or retail counter service for Labor Day. Normal postal operations are scheduled to resume Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Some locations may still provide access to self-service kiosks or post office boxes, depending on the facility.
Nebraska State Fair remains open for its final day
Labor Day is also the final day of the 2026 Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island.
The Nebraska Building is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., while 4-H and FFA static exhibits will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Parking remains free, and the fair’s Labor Day schedule includes Last Blast Dollar Rides from 5 to 7 p.m.
