OMAHA, Nebraska — Heartland Workers Center is marking National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 15, by highlighting its civic engagement work with immigrant and historically underrepresented communities across Nebraska.
The South Omaha-based nonprofit trains community leaders, conducts voter outreach and works to expand participation in public life. Its programs reach the Omaha metro area as well as Nebraska City, Columbus, Schuyler, Fremont and West Point.
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic observance held each September. The 2026 observance falls on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Heartland Workers Center connects civic engagement with community leadership
Heartland Workers Center has made civic participation one of its core programs alongside workers’ rights and leadership development.
The organization works with grassroots leaders to organize within their communities, engage with public institutions and participate in civic life.
Its broader mission centers on immigrant workers and other communities that have historically had less representation in public decision-making.
I Vote for My Family operates as a nonpartisan civic initiative
Heartland Workers Center also operates I Vote for My Family, a nonpartisan initiative focused on civic participation and public education.
The program is part of the organization’s larger effort to develop community leaders and connect residents with issues affecting their workplaces, neighborhoods and families.
Heartland Workers Center was founded around organizing workers in industries including meatpacking, construction, restaurants and cleaning services. The organization received nonprofit status in 2010 and later expanded its leadership and civic engagement programs.
The organization works in Omaha and five other Nebraska communities
Heartland Workers Center currently lists work in the Omaha metro area, Nebraska City, Columbus, Schuyler, Fremont and West Point.
Its headquarters are at 4923 S. 24th St., Suite 101, in South Omaha.

Cafecito with HWC returns to Omaha on Sept. 24
The organization’s next major community gathering is Cafecito with HWC, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at Omaha Design Center.
The annual event brings together community leaders, partners and supporters and helps fund Heartland Workers Center programs in leadership development, workplace advocacy and civic engagement.
National Voter Registration Day takes place Tuesday, Sept. 15. Cafecito with HWC follows nine days later on Sept. 24 in Omaha.
