This weekend, Nebraska comes alive with tradition and creativity as the Moonshell Storytelling Festival returns to Mahoney State Park. The festival has become one of the state’s most recognized cultural events in Nebraska, gathering storytellers who transform words into art and connect generations through imagination, memory, and heritage.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Mahoney State Park, the event offers a full day of stories, music, and family activities. More than just entertainment, it’s a celebration of the cultural richness that makes Nebraska unique.

Carolina Quiroga: A bilingual voice crossing borders

One of this year’s featured performers is Carolina Quiroga, a bilingual storyteller of Latin American origin whose work brings myths and legends to life—from the Rio Grande to Patagonia. Known for her engaging and dynamic style, she has performed at the National Storytelling Festival and at libraries, museums, and universities across the country.

Quiroga is also the creator of the acclaimed podcast Tres Cuentos, which dives into the heart of Latin American literature and highlights stories that transcend cultures and generations. She is currently working on her first children’s book while also serving as a teaching artist with Wolf Trap and as a member of TAPAS, inspiring audiences of all ages to rediscover the magic of storytelling. Her participation reinforces why cultural events in Nebraska are not only showcases of talent, but also opportunities for learning and connection.

Celebrating diverse voices

What makes the Moonshell Storytelling Festival special is its diversity of voices. Throughout the day, audiences will hear stories that range from Indigenous traditions to contemporary tales, all aimed at sparking creativity and strengthening community identity.

In a state where Native communities, European descendants, and a growing Latino population come together, storytelling acts as a universal language. Cultural events in Nebraska like this one promote respect, inclusion, and dialogue across generations.

Stories that reconnect communities

Organizers emphasize that storytelling is more than an art form—it is a way to reconnect with what matters most in a fast-paced world. Sitting down to listen to a story creates a moment of pause, reflection, and shared humanity.

By inviting families to gather and listen, the Moonshell Festival reminds us that stories are not only entertainment, but also tools for healing, memory, and unity. It’s why cultural events in Nebraska remain essential to the fabric of local life.

Family-friendly and welcoming

The festival is designed for all ages. Children will delight in stories crafted just for them, while adults can enjoy narratives ranging from lighthearted humor to thoughtful reflection. The setting of Mahoney State Park adds to the experience with picnic areas, trails, and wide-open spaces perfect for spending the day outdoors.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or portable chairs and arrive early for the best spots. With affordable admission and a warm, inclusive atmosphere, the Moonshell Storytelling Festival stands out as one of the must-see cultural events in Nebraska this summer.
