Omaha, NE — Omaha’s Mexican Independence Day celebration will take place at Gene Leahy Mall on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026.
Activities will run from 4 to 10 p.m. at the downtown Omaha park, located at 1001 Douglas St.
El Grito ceremony will close the celebration
El Grito is scheduled as the final event of the day and will be led by Mexico’s consul in Omaha, Jorge Ernesto Espejel Montes.
The ceremony commemorates the call to arms issued by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the early hours of Sept. 16, 1810, which marked the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence.
Although Mexican Independence Day is observed on Sept. 16, Omaha’s celebration will take place the preceding Saturday, bringing the cultural activities and civic ceremony together in a single day.
Gene Leahy Mall will host the ceremony again after the Consulate-led El Grito was held at the downtown Omaha park for the first time in September 2025.
