MCC offers free noncredit ESL at several Omaha-area locations
Metropolitan Community College’s noncredit ESL program provides free instruction in English reading, writing, speaking and listening for eligible adult learners.
The program is part of MCC Adult Education and includes more structure than a drop-in conversation class. Enrollment begins with an Adult Education information session and a pre-assessment to determine the appropriate instructional level.
New students also complete a three-week Transitional Learning Community introductory course and other Adult Education requirements, including digital literacy activities and periodic CASAS assessments.
MCC lists ESL instruction at these locations:
- MCC South Express: 3002 S. 24th St., Omaha.
- MCC at Yates Illuminates: 3260 Davenport St., Omaha.
- South Omaha Campus: 2309 Edward Babe Gomez Ave., Omaha.
- Elkhorn Valley Campus: 829 N. 204th St., Elkhorn.
- MCC Sarpy Center: 9110 Giles Road, La Vista.
- Fremont Area Center: 835 N. Broad St., Fremont.
Class schedules vary by location. MCC Adult Education can be reached at 531-622-4060 or [email protected].
ESL Omaha has open enrollment and six English levels
ESL Omaha offers six levels of English instruction, from beginner through advanced, and allows new students to join during the semester rather than waiting for a new session to begin.
The program states that classes, textbooks and other materials are completely free. Adults age 18 and older do not need to provide identification, immigration documentation or payment to participate.
Current classes meet at 10845 Harney St. in Omaha.
- Tuesday evening: 6:30–8:30 p.m., open to adults age 18 and older.
- Thursday morning: 9:15–11:15 a.m., for women.
The first class includes a short speaking and reading placement interview. Students then join the level that best matches their current English skills.
The ESL Omaha registration page keeps enrollment open throughout the semester and includes separate registration options for the Tuesday and Thursday classes.
Learning for ALL offers free English classes in person and online
Learning for ALL offers free ESL classes for adults at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Classes focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing and are available both in person and online.
The program is open to adults age 18 and older who live in Burt, Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Saunders or Washington counties in Nebraska, as well as Harrison, Mills or Pottawattamie counties in Iowa.
No Social Security number, identification or proof of residency is required to register. New students complete an English assessment over Zoom so they can be placed in an appropriate class.
Group classes meet twice a week for a total of three hours and include morning, evening and weekend options. As of Oct. 9, registration for the current group-class session is closed and will reopen Jan. 4, 2027.
Learning for ALL can be reached at 402-502-0698. Its office is at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center, 6001 Dodge St., CEC 117B, in Omaha.
Free conversation classes continue every Wednesday and Friday
Adults who do not want to wait for the next group-class enrollment period still have a free option through Learning for ALL’s English Conversation Classes.
The drop-in sessions do not require registration and are open to all English levels.
- Wednesdays: 1–2:30 p.m.
- Fridays: 4–5 p.m.
- Location: Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus.
- Cost: Free.
- Parking: Free in Visitor Lot E for class participants.
The current conversation-class calendar includes sessions throughout October, including Oct. 9, 14, 16, 21, 23 and 28.

Each program has a different enrollment process
MCC is the most structured of the three options and requires an information session, assessment and introductory course before regular ESL instruction. ESL Omaha allows adults to join during the semester and does not require identification or payment.
Learning for ALL uses quarterly registration for its regular English classes, while its Wednesday and Friday conversation sessions remain available without registration.
Program schedules and space can change during the year. ESL Omaha currently has open registration, Learning for ALL’s next group-class registration opens Jan. 4, 2027, and MCC Adult Education continues enrollment through its information-session process.
