The project connects Frida’s image with Omaha artists working across different visual disciplines. The exhibit also continues a line of cultural programming that has connected South Omaha with Mexican memory, immigrant history and the community’s artistic expressions.
The South Omaha Museum of Immigrant History, the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands and the Linda and Jose Garcia Legacy Fund are participating in this programming dedicated to Frida Kahlo’s legacy.
Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907
Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Her work is recognized for its self-portraits, use of Mexican symbols and exploration of the body, identity, pain and everyday life.
Her family home, known as the Blue House, was turned into a museum after her death. The Frida Kahlo Museum preserves personal objects, paintings, documents, photographs and spaces tied to her life and work.
In Omaha, the commemoration takes that artistic legacy as the starting point for a local exhibit with artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, tapestry, paper and printed images.
