The longtime Omaha prosecutor says her campaign is focused on public service, community experience and a new direction for the County Attorney’s Office.

Makayla Danner is running for Douglas County Attorney, bringing more than two decades of experience as a City of Omaha prosecutor to the 2026 race.

Danner, who was born and raised in Omaha, has centered her campaign on public service, community involvement and what she describes as a forward-looking approach to the office. The Douglas County Attorney serves as the county’s top prosecutor and plays a major role in criminal justice decisions that affect families, neighborhoods and public safety across the Omaha area.

According to her campaign, Danner has worked for more than 20 years as a prosecutor with the City of Omaha. She has also been involved in local schools, youth sports, neighborhood organizations and community groups.

A campaign rooted in Omaha

Danner’s campaign materials describe her as a graduate of Omaha Public Schools and Creighton University. She also notes her experience as an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Her public biography emphasizes her connection to Douglas County through work, family and volunteer service. In addition to her legal career, Danner has served as a youth sports coach, mentor and school board member.

Her campaign says she is seeking to build a coalition around a justice system that is fair, accessible and effective.

Democratic race for county attorney

Danner is running in the Democratic race for Douglas County Attorney. The primary election is scheduled for May 12, and Danner will appear on the ballot.

The race also includes Amy Jacobsen, a former deputy Douglas County attorney.

The winner of the Democratic primary is expected to move forward in the race for the county attorney’s office, a position currently held by Republican Don Kleine.

Danner’s campaign has also announced endorsements from local leaders and organizations, including Omaha Mayor John Ewing, Nebraska Young Democrats, the Nebraska Democratic Party Black Caucus, Women Who Run Nebraska and Preston Love.
